U Than Aung (1955)

U Than Aung was born in the town of Bogalay in the Irrawaddy Division. He graduated from the State School of Fine Arts in Mandalay in 1972 and studied for seven years under various art instructors. Than Aung is primarily an impressionist who works in oil, although he has done some work on watercolors. Many of his subjects are still life, which are influenced by Western techniques. His flowers paintings always include a silver Burmese bowl, jug, or other traditional object. He also does landscape paintings with figures in the background. One of U Than Aung’s paintings was selected to illustrate the United Nations Yearly Report in 1997.
